Who are the Horizon Hurricanes?
We are a self-advocacy group made up of individuals with developmental disabilities and three support staff. We hold regular meetings, once a week on Friday afternoons in the large board room at Horizons Centre.
Our focus is on community inclusion, mentorship and increasing self-advocacy skills.

Steps to help us meet this outcome:
- The Horizons Hurricanes will provide leadership through a Directors Committee
- The Hurricanes will partner in community based initiatives through networking
- The Hurricanes will be actively involved in social marketing community based initiatives
- The Hurricanes will influence change by organizing community based initiatives
Anyone is more than welcome to join in on one of our meetings to observe what we do and what we are all about!

Self-Advocate of the Month
Congratulations Joey!
Joey has been voted the Hurricanes Self-Advocate of the Month for May. Joey was nominated for going above and beyond the call of duty as the Hurricanes Public Relations Person. Joey uses every possible opportunity to network with community members, create connections, hand out business cards and promote the Hurricanes and Horizons Centre.
Joey was also nominated for being a leader who is willing to lead by example and motivate people through his enthusiasm for the Hurricanes. Joey is the first to volunteer for any initiative that the Hurricanes plan, he’s always willing to go the extra mile and put in the time necessary to help meet our goals.
Keep up the great work Joey!

Sherri- for doing a great job in the administration position and all her hard work!
Jeremiah- for being a patient mentor, using listening skills to help a peer fill out a form!
Jean T- for finding someone to cover her position as secretary while she would be at camp!
Ashley- for being very polite while mentoring a peer making brownies for the Hurricanes bake sale!
